Inside Flower Farms in Nakuru, Kenya: From Growing to Export
A First-Hand Look at How Export-Quality Flowers Are Produced
In March, I visited two flower farms in Nakuru, Kenya, to gain a deeper understanding of how export-quality roses and summer flowers are grown, processed, and prepared for international markets.
For us at Lisa’s Flowers Export, it is essential not only to supply flowers, but to truly understand the full process behind their quality. This visit provided valuable insight into every stage — from cultivation to final packaging — ensuring we continue to deliver the highest standards to our clients worldwide.
🌱 From Cultivation to Harvest
The journey begins in carefully controlled greenhouse environments, where roses and summer flowers are grown under optimal conditions.
Each stage of growth is closely monitored to ensure:
- strong stems
- vibrant colors
- healthy, well-formed blooms
This level of care is what defines export-grade flowers from Kenya.
✂️ Cutting and Grading
Once the flowers reach the ideal stage of maturity, they are carefully cut and transported for processing.
A key step is the grading process, where each stem is assessed based on:
- stem length
- bud size
- straightness
- overall quality
This ensures consistency — a critical requirement for wholesalers, florists, and importers.
❄️ Cold Chain & Storage
Immediately after grading, the flowers are placed in cold rooms to preserve freshness.
Maintaining the cold chain is essential to:
- slow down the aging process
- maintain flower quality
- ensure long vase life
From the greenhouse to storage, every step is designed to protect the flowers before export.
📦 Packaging and Export Preparation
Once cooled, the flowers are carefully packed for export.
This process ensures:
- protection of stems and buds
- uniformity in each box
- readiness for international transport
Flowers are handled with precision to ensure they arrive in excellent condition.
✅ Quality Control at Every Stage
One of the most important aspects observed during the visit was the strict quality control process.
At every stage — from harvesting to packing — flowers are inspected to meet export standards. This ensures reliability and consistency for international buyers.
🌸 Wide Range of Premium Varieties
The farms offered an impressive selection of:
- premium roses
- spray roses
- seasonal summer flowers
Many of these varieties are unique and not commonly found in other flower farms in Africa.
During the visit, I carefully selected the varieties that best meet the needs of our clients and documented them to provide accurate recommendations.
